yeah yeah yeahs on letterman

i don't have a whole lot to say at the moment, but i had to get this up because karen o, with all her growls and "hah"'s, is just too good not to.

stay, part 3

or, maybe it's the night before she leaves, and all i want is for the darkness not to fade, knowing that sunrise means she has to leave. i wish she could stay. i wish...

jem : "stay now" mp3
from the lp finally woken (ato records, 2004)
daylight comes, daylight comes
and you’ve gotta go
breaks my heart, breaks my heart
to have to watch you go
wish i knew, wish i knew
when you’ll be back again
however long, it’s just too long
until we meet again

stay now, stay now
just a little more
cause this love, this love
is what living's for
stay now

hide in bed, sheets overhead
blocking out the sun
feel like we are marooned at sea
away from everyone
and i, i hate to say goodbye
i, want you to touch me one more time

stay now, stay now
just a little more
cause this love, this love
is what living's for
stay now, stay now
just a little more
cause this love, this love
is what living's for

stay now
stay now
stay now

i will see you again soon...

stay, part 2

but then again, sometimes the separation is only temporary, and "stay" represents a hopeful opportunity. it provides a reminder of all the recent memories that i'm desperate to hold on to and draw strength from. maybe it was the very first night i met her, and the feeling that i never wanted to go away. maybe it was the first concert we went to, when i didn't want alexi murdoch to ever stop playing so the night would never have to end. maybe it's these past few weeks that seem to pass so unmercifully, drawing us ever closer to the day that seems impossible to survive.

belly : "stay" mp3
from the lp star (reprise records, 1993)
stay...oh stay
solomon dives for that big dusky pearl
solomon sighs, he knows he's older than me
sleeps with the fishes soon

stay...oh stay
solomon crawls on the belly of god
solomon falls on his face in love with me
he grows as old as the sea deep where the fishes are

stay...oh stay

he lives in the yard
he keeps himself hard
he keeps himself homeless and heartless and hard
he sleeps under stairs
along with the heirs of nothing
and nothing means no one who cares
but i love him dear
and i love him near
and i've loved him hundreds of thousands of years

stay.

stay...oh stay (stay with me)
stay...oh stay (stay with me)
it's not time for me to go
it's not time for me to go
it's not time for me to go

stay.

stay, part 1

but more often than not, "stay" is an expression between lovers. sometimes it's a jilted party whose heart is about to be broken and left alone. it's then an apologetic plea for forgiveness for past transgressions, but with a (sometimes) subtle menacing quality that belies an overwhelming feeling of spite. sometimes things just don't work out...

bernard butler : "stay" mp3
from the lp people move on (sony, 1998)
these days are wastin' away
the kind that i'd rather save
don't go, stay...
don't go, stay...

i, i hope it don't rain
the sky is laughing again
don't go, stay...this time
don't go, just stay...this time

i know i've gotta move with the times
for you to be mine, for you to be mine
i tried to believe what you say
that you won't change if you just stay
don't go, stay...this time
don't go, just stay...this time

you remember that fear's on your side
good people gonna keep you alive
and you remember all the tears in my eyes
when all the things you do they blow your mind

don't go, stay...this time
don't go, just stay...this time

stay, stay
don't go
stay...
don't go

don't go
stay...

stay, a prelude

stay. it seems unfair to other words that such a short, simple one can convey such powerful emotions and intensity under so many different circumstances. maybe it's a 6-year old daughter pleading with her father not to walk out on his wife and family. maybe it's a young man whose grandmother is fading before he's had a chance to really know who she was. or maybe it's the singer on the road, begging his audience not to leave so they can play just a little bit longer.

jackson browne : "the load out / stay" mp3
from the lp running on empty (elektra, 1977)
now the seats are all empty
let the roadies take the stage
pack it up and tear it down
they're the first to come and the last to leave
working for that minimum wage
they'll set it up in another town

tonight the people were so fine
they waited there in line
and when they got up on their feet they made the show
and that was sweet--
but i can hear the sound
of slamming doors and folding chairs
and that's a sound they'll never know

now roll them cases out and lift them amps
haul them trusses down and get 'em up them ramps
'cause when it comes to moving me
you know you guys are the champs
but when that last guitar's been packed away
you know that i still want to play
so just make sure you got it all set to go
before you come for my piano

but the band's on the bus
and they're waiting to go
we've got to drive all night and do a show in chicago
or detroit, i don't know
we do so many shows in a row
and these towns all look the same
we just pass the time in the hotel rooms
and wander 'round backstage
till those lights come up and we hear that crowd
and we remember why we came

now we got country and western on the bus
r & b, we got disco in eight tracks and cassettes in stereo
we've got rural scenes and magazines
we've got truckers on c.b.
we got richard pryor on the video
we got time to think of the ones we love
while the miles roll away
but the only time that seems too short
is the time that we get to play

people you've got the power over what we do
you can sit there and wait
or you can pull us through
come along, sing the song
you know that you can't go wrong
'cause when that morning sun comes beating down
you're gonna wake up in your town
but we'll be scheduled to appear
a thousand miles away from here

people stay just a little bit longer
we want to play -- just a little bit longer
now the promoter don't mind
and the union don't mind
if we take a little time
and we leave it all behind and sing
one more song

oh won’t you stay just a little bit longer
please, please, please say you will
say you will

oh won’t you stay just a little bit longer
oh please, please stay just a little bit more

now the promoter don’t mind
and the roadies don’t mind
if we take a little time
and leave this all behind and sing
one more song

spoon

i'm a little late with this, but better late than never, right? here's the incomparable britt daniel and spoon performing on letterman from last week. last time i saw spoon, he spent half the show facing his drummer. maybe it's just he couldn't do that this time with tv cameras on him, but hopefully he'll keep turned to the audience when he comes around in september...

spoon : "the underdog (live on the late show)" mp3
from the late show with david letterman (july 11, 2007)
from the lp ga ga ga ga ga (merge records, 2007)

i just want this frame to freeze

sometimes life goes so fast. hard to believe, but it's been nearly a month since my last post. in a little over a week, my life is going to get considerably suckier because my girlfriend is moving 2,500 miles away. in the meantime it's been all about finding as much together time as possible before she leaves, which explains why i have not been making time for any of this. it's been hard at times to be happy in the face of this impending distance, but never for a moment have i not wanted everything to freeze.

portastatic : "song for a clock" mp3
from the lp be still please (merge records, 2006)
last night we just fell into bed
and let the poison drain out of our heads
before the sun strikes shade across the back of your bare legs
we'll be sleeping
heavy with love instead

heavy with love instead

be still, be still please
oh i just want everything to freeze
those skinny little arms are a windmill
we all tumble forward like a crooked old wheel, i know
i know, but tonight be still
please be still

this morning i was made aware
as i tried to cut the back of my hair
of the first mosquito of the year
buzzing down the surface of the mirror
like winter never happened and another summer's near
but i just want to keep the calendar here

be still, be still please
oh i just want this frame to freeze
those skinny little arms are a windmill
and we all tumble forward like a crooked old wheel, i know
i know, but today be still
please be still
