favorite song -- death cab for cutie : "a lack of color"

one of my favorite things about the music i listen to is finding moments where my life is reflected in someone else's song and, hence, in someone else's experience. there is almost always a great deal of comfort in knowing that whatever you're going through has been encountered and lived through before. but sometimes that knowledge doesn't make things any better. sometimes it doesn't make things any easier to take.

today it occurred to me that the course of dating is really very much like the verse-chorus-verse structure of many contemporary songs. the verses always start out the same--boy meets girl--and always end the same--boy is alone. as with any good song, the middle of each verse is some kind of variation on a common theme, but each is characterized in its own way with a distinctive wrinkle here and a specific memory there. but the chorus is always the same, and for me it's always been pretty well represented by "a lack of color".

ben gibbard has an uncanny ability to write songs overflowing with plaintive longing and inconsolable loneliness. but there is something about "a lack of color" that is just true. perhaps it is the light piano track that makes you feel a little less alone, but is so minimal that you're sure that if you turned around to see who was there they would surely be gone. maybe it's the sound of sliding fingers on guitar strings that only serves to remind you of all the details that you took for granted or never heard in the first place. or maybe it's the sentiment itself, finding awareness in false perceptions that made you believe things were not as good or as bad as you might have thought. whatever it is about this song, it always seems to fit the spaces in between the verses. and yeah, even though ben gibbard has sung it a thousand times before, it doesn't really make it any easier to take, does it?

death cab for cutie : "a lack of color" mp3
from the lp transatlanticism (barsuk records, 2003)
and when i see you
i really see you upside down
but my brain knows better
it picks you up and turns you around
turns you around
turns you around

if you feel discouraged
when there's a lack of color here
please don't worry lover
it's really bursting at the seams
absorbing everything
the spectrum's a to z

this is fact, not fiction
for the first time in years
all the girls in every girlie magazine
can't make me feel any less alone

i'm reaching for the phone
to call at 7:03
and on your machine, i slur a plea
for you to come home
but i know it's too late
i should have given you a reason to stay
given you a reason to stay
given you a reason to stay
given you a reason to stay

this is fact, not fiction
for the first time in years...
